Herbal Adrenal Support

With the high amounts of stress so common in our daily lives, fatigue can easily become a persistent problem. Our adrenal glands are involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, the regulation of blood sugar, and producing epinephrine (adrenaline) during times of stress to speed up the rate of metabolism and producing energy to help the body deal with stress.

During sudden danger the adrenal glands pump the hormone ephinephrine in to the bloodstream producing the dramatic "flight or fight" response. Ongoing stressful situations, such as a stressful job, depression or illness, force the adrenal glands to work constantly which can lead to adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal insufficiency produces symptoms of fatigue and can lead to other health problems. Nutrients, herbs, and stress management techniques can help the adrenal glands to remain strong and increase energy levels.

Ginseng, licorice and nettles are three herbs that can help to keep the adrenals healthy and strong. Nettles are rich in vitamins and minerals, licorice contains a substance similar to adrenal hormone and ginseng contains ginenosides which helps to counteract adrenal stress. You can use the following recipe for making tea, tinctures, or an herbal honey paste (electuary).

Ginseng Tonic

Blend together:
2 tsp. American Ginseng Root
4 tsp. Licorice
1 tsp. Korean Ginseng
1 tsp. Astragalus
2 tsp. Nettles
1 tbls. Siberian Ginseng
1 tbls. Alfalfa Leaf
1 tsp. Ginger

If preparing a blend is too much for you, use nettles! A couple cups of nettle tea each day will help nurture your adrenals and provide nourishing vitamins and trace minerals. In the spring, fresh young nettle shoots can be eaten. My favorite is Nettle Soup! You can get a recipe for Potato Nettle Soup at the following link. http://www.wildroots.com/recipe/Detailed/169.html

Combined with a well balanced diet with plenty of exercise, supportive herbs can help keep your body strong and energetic.

Caution: Licorice can raise blood pressure. Consult your health practioner before using.
