Favorite Cold Remedies

How do you care for yourself when you catch a common cold virus? While there may be no cure for the common cold, I think my favorite herbal remedies help my family to feel better sooner and have fewer complications. Because I know what I like to use, I make sure to always have these remedies on hand. You never know when you will need them and they really need to be used at the first signs of a cold to be most effective. Some of my favorite remedies are Elder Berry Syrup, Eucalyptus Chest Rub, and Usnea Extract.

Elder Berries (Sambucus nigra) contains antiviral properties that help you fight off cold and flu symptoms. Elder Berry Syrup is a tasty remedy that is easy to get kids to take and adults too. Recommended dose is 1-3 teaspoons, 2 - 3 times per day. See our featured recipe below if you would like a recipe to make your own Elder Berry Syrup. Eucalyptus Chest Rub relies on the effect of eucalyptus on the respiratory system, helping to open the bronchial passages and sinuses for easier breathing. Because what is applied to the skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream, the anti-microbial properties of eucalyptus can also facilitate healing. I often add other medicinal herbal or essential oils as needed such as thyme or stillingia if their healing properties are appropriate for the symptoms. Usnea Extract has anti-microbial properties that are excellent in fighting infections of the respiratory and urinary system. Our family has been using usnea for the past 5 years and it has become my favorite herb for sore throats and acute infections. According to Christopher Hobbs in his booklet "Usnea: The Herbal Antibiotic", Usnea is useful for treating fungal infections, acute bacterial infections, colds, flu, bronchitis, sinus, urinary infections and more. Recommended dosage is 30-40 drops 3-5 times per day until symptoms improve.
