Therapeutic Lip Balm
This time of year, when the days start to become cold in the North, lip balm is an essential for protecting against chapped, sore lips. With a few basic ingredients, lip balms can be made very easily at home for friends and family. Our recipes are for small batches so that you can try a few different kinds without waste.
Therapeutic Lip Balm
This lip balm is healing and soothing for sore chapped lips and can also be used for minor cuts and scratches. We like to keep a tube handy to dab it on insect bites in the summer.
5 Tbls. Infused Herb Oil
5 tsp Beeswax Pastilles
10 drops Vitamin E
4 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
We suggest herbs such as Calendula, Plantain and St. John's Wort for this balm. Place 1 tablespoon of each herb in the top of a double boiler and cover with approximately 1/2 cup oil. Follow the Basic Directions for an Infused Oil below. Then, measure infused oil into a small, heat resistant glass jar. Add the beeswax and place the jar in a pan filled with a couple inches of water. Heat slowly until the wax is completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in the remaining ingredients. Pour into small pots or tubes. Cool and use.
Basic Directions for an Infused Oil:
In a double boiler combine selected herbs and cover with pure, cold pressed vegetable oil such as olive, apricot, almond or sunflower oil. Heat on very low heat for 30-60 minutes. Lower heat allows for longer cooking time and produces a better quality oil. Allow to cool and then strain through cheesecloth. Store in covered glass jar in refrigerator.
Herbal Mint Lip Balm
4 Tbls. Infused Herb Oil
4 tsp Beeswax Pastilles
1/2 tsp. Jojoba Oil
10 drops Vitamin E Oil
1 drop Peppermint Essential Oil
For this lip balm we suggest Lemon Balm and Spearmint. Place 1 tablespoon of each herb in the top of a double boiler and cover with approximately 1/3 cup oil. Infuse according to the Basic Directions for an Infused Oil above. Once the oil is completed, measure out four tablespoons into a small, heat resistant glass jar. Add the beeswax and place the jar in a pan filled with a couple inches of water. Heat slowly until the wax is completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in the remaining ingredients. Pour into small pots or tubes. Cool and use.
Vegan Lip balm
3 Tbls. Almond Oil
2 tsp Candelilla Wax
1 tsp Carnauba Wax
1/2 tsp. Jojoba Oil
10 drops Vitamin E Oil
Measure oil into a small, heat resistant glass jar. Add the waxes and place the jar in a pan filled with a couple inches of water. Heat slowly until the wax is completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in the remaining ingredients. Pour into small pots or tubes. Cool and use.
